Bigger isn't always better December 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
You'd think that the biggest Dino Papo has released would be the best, but like me you'd be wrong. That being said let me just clarify that compared to other Spino's he's a 20/5, as the worst Papo figure would STILL be 1,000X better than anything else on the market.
The Spinosaurus is about 5.5 inches (a little smaller than the T-Rex) not counting the sail which really doesn't stand out in the pose he's in thanks to his hunched back. Alas, one look at the beast and anyone will measure it's height via the head, and probably still will unless they break out a ruler and do some measurements. It's also a massive 1 foot in length, making it hands down the biggest one of the series so far, though that's the best thing the figure has to offer.
Looking at his design you are left breathless once more by Papo. He has many teeth that are surprisingly sharp, and he has little bumps that run from his tail up to his neck. I also love how accurate Papo was in recreating him and the T-Rex. Spinosaurus was longer, but T-Rex was taller, which if you put them next to each other will look like just that. The T-Rex is also MUCH heavier and his body/legs are thicker making him seem more muscular which is historically accurate as well. However, my favorite feature on the Spinosaurus is his mouth, which open at least 25% more than the other dino's. Seriously, I can stick the T-Rex'es thick neck in there. He is durable from what I can tell, though his tail is longer than most as well as his arms so you may want to be careful about bending/breaking them.
This would have been a grand figure, but somethings holding him back, something that makes him go from awesome to just great- his color scheme. In the movie this terrifying star was a redish/brown color. Papo took this idea, threw it out the window, and instead gave him a light forest green skin. In addition to that travesty he only has two other colors, both a form of light/slightly dark green, to make up his skin. Doesn't sound like to much depth, and it's not. His colors do him no justice, and all these factors make him look ridiculous when compared to other Papo dino's- it seems like Papo tried to make the massive JP3 Dino but somewhere along the way ended up making a completely different animal with only a few movie similarities like the head. I really wish I could give this figure a rating of 3 1/2 stars rather than 4, which imo is a tad bit much for him when compared to Papo's other works, but oh well.
So now the question arises, should you get this for your child? Probably not. Kids rather trade in grand detail for playability, and I'm sure you could find a more articulate Spinosaurus toy out there. If your looking for a Dinosaur figure to catch attention I once again can't recommend buying him as the Allosaurus, who's a whopping 11 inches long, would be a better choice than the mono-colored Spino. I suppose if your a fan of Papo dino's, which who isn't, then it wouldn't hurt to get the largest, greatest one out of the series, though I think that honor christens the T-Rex, or Allosaurus.
A terrific representation. September 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, the paint job on Spinosaurus isn't as colorful as the other dinos in the fabulous Papo collection - but you can touch him up yourself, no problem. Overall, the design is fantastic - the mouth gets a lot of attention, and if you paint his sail bright and colorful, the toy stands out amongst the Papo line. Spino IS massive, and the face is really terrific; a ton of character. The paint job is a little bland, but the toy is still a superlative representation, nonetheless. The sheer scale and design quality are exceptional, as with all the Papo dinosaurs. You'll love it!!
Beautiful Quality June 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The papo Spinosaurus has beautiful quality and it's huge! It's jaw can move up and down. I'm so happy with it, if you want a great dinosaur to add to your collection I would definetly recommend purchasing this Spinosaurus! 5 out of 5 stars!
THE BEST SPINOSAURUS! January 1, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic recreation of the Spinosaurus. Museum Quality detail and finish; this makes a great display piece.
Larger, as it should be, than PAPO's T-Rex; it captures the full snarling ferocity of this sailbacked beast, made famous in Jurassic Park III.
