Product Description
D-Rex Interactive Pet Dino is the ultimate pet. A ferocious yet loyal dinosaur with an independent personality, D-Rex combines robotics, proprietary software and reptilian skin to create a lifelike appearance and behavior. He'll walk, chomp, bare his teeth and roar to let you know what he wants. D-Rex might demand food or want to play a game, and he'll hear your voice and respond to your touch. Like the ideal pet, D-Rex will protect your stuff and attack on command. Requires four "C" batteries, included, and two "AA" batteries, not included. Measures 22"L x 8.75"W x 13.28"H.

Amazon.com Review
Ultra-fierce and unbelievably fun, the D-REX Interactive Dinosaur is a cool, prehistoric creature with a personality all his own. Designed to keep kids eight and up entertained for days, this robotic D-REX moves, roars, and responds to your child's voice and touch. A bone-shaped controller even lets you "train" him as a guard dinosaur or an attack pet.

The Good: Ferocious robotic dinosaur!

The Bad: Background noise can make it tough for him to "seek" you out

In a Nutshell: This smart, quirky "pet" will inspire tons of imaginative play

Get Ready for Realistic, Imaginative Fun
Right out of the box, this scaly pet D-REX feels more authentic than most other dinosaur toys on the market. His rubbery, reptilian skin is loosely stretched to accommodate movement, and he has a slightly strange texture that is soft to the touch. While his oversized feet and a fun spiked collar balance his menacing teeth and his darting yellow eyes, he is still a little scary looking. Don't worry--you'll soon discover that he has a sense of humor and a soft spot for anyone willing to scratch the back of his head.

Before you start getting to know D-REX personally, you'll need to use a Phillips screwdriver to insert five "C" batteries in his tail and two "AAA" batteries in the bone-shaped controller. Once he's powered up, D-REX is ready to start showing off and responding to his surroundings. He'll roar, turn his head, and blink his eyes.

Cool Robotics Technology for Interactive Play
When you pet D-REX on the head, touch sensors let him respond with an appreciative roar. If he seems hungry, you can stick something in his mouth and he'll chomp away on it. And the bone-shaped controller lets you prompt five different types of behavior. Press "attack," and he'll launch forward while roaring. Press "prank," and he'll fart, burp, or roar. In seek mode, he uses a noise sensor to locate you and walk towards you. Due to the room's background noise, we found that he had some difficulty with this task. But it was funny (and kind of cute) when he bumped into walls and backed away in surprise.

Perhaps our favorite mode was "guard." In this mode, you can set D-REX up in front of your bedroom door or your favorite toys and he will scan the room, letting out a big roar if he detects the motion of "intruders." There's even a question mode that lets you replace your out-dated magic eight ball with dinosaur wisdom. Each time you press this button, D-REX will answer a question by nodding "Yes" or shaking his head "No."

D-REX is programmed to respond as a pet with an independent mind. This means that, despite his five-button remote, he won't walk where ever you want him to. Kids who expect to "drive" him around the room like a remote control car may be disappointed, but we actually enjoyed this fact a lot, since it made him more realistic. And we expect that kids who are fascinated by either dinosaurs or robotics will agree with us on this. As an added bonus, D'REX offers a battery-saving sleep mode, which parents are sure to appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Grandson extatic   January 8, 2009
D-REX was all my 6 year old grandson wanted for Christmas. He received many things from Santa but was quite distraught till he opened his gifts at my house. The look on his face when he relized he got his wish was priceless. The fact is we all had as much fun with it as he did. He is still enjoying it's many great features, including scaring his new puppy with it. It is certainly worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars D Rex Amazing fun for 5 year old boy   January 8, 2009
I was very hesitant to purchase a $150 toy that requires batteries as my experience has been that battery powered toys quickly end up in the corner and kid's lose interest when the batteries are dead and mom and dad lose interest in replacing them. I also thought it would get old quick. But my 5 year old boy wanted this from "Santa" more than anything else for Christmas so we rolled the dice and bought it. It has exceeded my expectations in most ways.

The toy is very realistic and has great facial expressions which are a bit freaky at first. My little boy has found ways to incorporate this toy into with his other toys, such as pretending the D-Rex is trying to attack his Star Wars figures and my little girl will borrow it and let her barbies take a ride on his back pretending that he is a "nice T-Rex". The autonomous nature of the D Rex makes this type of playing very fun as the movements and actions are unpredictable which enhances the feeling that it is a real creature rather than just a toy.

On the downside, it doesn't move around very much and ends up sitting in one place most of the time taking a couple of steps and then stopping for long periods of time. It doesn't recognize sound and light as well as I had hoped, but this is probably due to having the television or radio on in the background confusing the sensors. This doesn't really matter to my boy anyway who typically sits on the floor and plays with it so the fact that is doesn't move around quickly or often is fine for his style of play.

I don't know if they will eventually lose interest, but the realism and randomness of the D Rex has kept them playing with it daily since Christmas morning.

If you kid is imaginative and likes to be creative, they will use the toy in ways you never imagined. If they just like to drive around remote control cars, this will not satisfy them.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun !!!!!!   January 7, 2009
I first saw D-Rex the Interactive Dinosaur, on television during a commercial and could not find one anywhere so I went to Amazon. And of course you had it.
This is one of those toys that is not only fun for our 7 year old grandson but the rest of the family. It's so much fun ! Its amazing what this dinosaur can do. It walks and talks, obeys commands chews on a bone which is the remote, moves its eyes, furrows its brow and loves when you pet it on the head. I would definitely recommend this toy to anyone who likes to be entertained. It was a great Christmas Gift to our grandson from Santa.

4 out of 5 stars D-Rex rocks   January 7, 2009
Upon speaking to Santa, my 7-year-old son could only remember one toy on the list he'd given me...D-Rex. Even though he received numerous toys on Christmas morning, D-Rex was the first one he spotted. D-Rex was the main one he played with. "D-Rex is my best toy of all," he said. It is now almost two weeks after Christmas...and he still plays with D-Rex...unlike some of his other toys.
