Editorial Review For the young Rube Goldbergs of the world, this may be a gateway toy. With eight building platforms, 48 brightly colored, 2.25-inch plastic gears, a handle, and 39 connecting pieces, a child can progress from simple cause-and-effect play to constructing a racing car, caterpillar, or zigzag stairs. (Directions for assembly are illustrated, but preschoolers will need adult help). The activity guide (in English, French, German, and Spanish) provides two pages of instructions and suggestions for mini-experiments. This durable, easy-to-use toy is good for kids who like knowing how things work. --Louise Carter

a bit unfair January 6, 2009 This review is a bit unfair, because my child (4) has not played with it much. May be toy overload, and that he was familiar with it, but has barely played with it.
Great concept, lacking design December 29, 2008 These sound like a really great building set with lots of educational potential. Unfortunately, the pieces are not designed very well. Many of the pieces are difficult for little ones to put together, much less to pull back apart. Also, the way the pieces work together is pretty limiting to how you can build and get the gears working together. Various pieces interconnect, but they don't all universally interconnect, and if you connect some with blank spacer connects and others with the gear axle pieces, they come out different heights and the gears don't line up. Ideally a set like this would be designed with universally connecting pieces that would allow for things to easily line up and work together. There's definitely fun to be had with this toy, but it could be much much better had more thought gone into its design.
Excellent toy October 22, 2008 My three year old asked for this toy for her birthday because she likes playing with it so much at school. It's amazing. Hours of fun, both building the gears and using the pieces for any number of other games. It's a terrific toy - providing educational entertainment for multiple aged kids and adults. Highly recommended.
My Grandson loves this toy May 18, 2008 I got this for my Grandsons 5th birthday. He had no problem fitting the bits together and devised many ways to make the gears work. The family is able to enjoy playing with this as well. If your child enjoys building things this would be a great gift.
Terrible toy February 8, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Gears! Beginning building set was a huge disappointment. This is actually the first product I have felt strongly enough about to review. I bought it for my three-year-old who loves to build and construct. The pieces that connect the gears are so poorly designed that it is virtually impossible to build anything. They don't fit together well and they certainly don't balance. The constructions shown on the box must have been made by a team of adults holding the pieces in place while someone else super-glued them. Extremely shoddy design and misleading photos. With some of our more complex building sets we model to our son the concept of "try and try again" but with this toy we had to introduce the concept of somebody making a very bad toy. My toddler kept telling me to try and the things kept falling apart. My son lost interest in under ten minutes and has never asked for it again. We had unfortunately ripped the box open so I couldn't return it. I actually threw it away which I have never done with a toy. I just would not feel right donating this and there are many small parts which pose a choking hazard (it does say this on the box). We put it in the recycling bin in the hope that someone can get some use out of it!
