its simple, a cute little gift we got for my 7 y.o. who is studying fossils in school now.
Didn't plan it, think I'd given it for her bday and put it away,but pulled it out one morning while her sis was still asleep, and we sat in the yard eating oranges and digging for fossils. I think this thing was under 10 dollars, and we spent maybe 1.5 hrs. carefully digging away (its small--but you are supposed to dig carefully so it takes time) with sis joining when she woke up. I have to give a good rating to something this inexpensive, simple, quiet, educational. If your kid is very wired, not the sitting still brushing away bits of sand type its not going to work, but you already know that :)
She was very happy with all the fossils she found in it., and there's a neat little guide telling what they are. I recommend this. If your kid is into fossils--also it would make a great goody-gift instead of a bag o' plastic stuff. I don't recall exactly but I think it was cheap enough to use for that and a really neat educational toy for the price.
You can't overthink it--of course you wouldn't find 10 fossils all bunched together like this in nature and they all happen to be ideal specimans and of different varieties. But its a nice activity for your child.
