Awesome! November 21, 2008 This is an awesome Technic set, with 1384 pieces (according to the original package)! The positive reviews are accurate. However, it is an older set; as far as I know, stores no longer carry it, so you would most likely have to pay a premium to own it. (I paid about [...]when I bought it directly from Amazon, not third-paty vendors.)
Awesome Set - must have October 1, 2008 I love this set mainly because comes with 2 regular and 2 XL motors, remote control, infrared sensor each capable of controlling 2 motors. My son is 8th and this is his third set and he adores it the most. He was able to build almost on his own, whenever he run to a problem and time to time he would ask me to inspect it. I helped him start few small creations without instruction just to get him going and he is now mixing different components on his own. I think this is excellent way to introduce mechanical engineering to a child, the engine with moving pistons, rotating crankshaft, differential and etc. The only sad thing is that this set now cost above MSRP and once it cost $124 at Wal-Mart, supply demand go figure.
Big, beautiful, and out of production September 12, 2008 This is a gorgeous set. One can nitpick about things like the ornamental hydraulics on the front blade, but the track design and operation are mechanical poetry. Unfortunately, the set is out of production and out of stock at Lego. There are, as of September '08, a few retailers that sell the set at near-msrp, but many are pushing the price to stratospheric levels. As a value proposition, you may want to take a look at Lego's current and upcoming offerings. The 8294 excavator is a great set to which you can add some power functions. And 2009 may bring another tracked Technic vehicle.
Could never go wrong with LEGOs July 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this as a surprise gift for a friend who is crazy about legos. And trust me, the box did wonders even before it was opened :) The product came bundled as expected. With all the manuals and detailed building directions, ensures a bout of satisfaction on build completion. Highly recommended.
One Amazing Toy March 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Lego clearly makes some of the best educational toys in the world, but we were amazed at the complexity and realism of this model. My budding engineer 9-year-old was immersed in building this model for nearly three days. This kit is also an amazing value. If you consider the number of parts, especially all the motors and the wireless remote, this kit has a very low cost per part. We haven't figured out if there is a way to make both caterpillars move at the same time (doesn't seem to be possible), but it is still great fun to play with. Don't forget to download the alternative design available for this kit on the Lego web site.
