interesting to let children learn about peoples who ruled the world centuries away from today and who made history and a cultural basis for our world today
Very awesome HAIR October 25, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I saw this doll on the shelf, I immediatley grabbed two of them. The most remarkable thing about her is that her hair is set in a perfect part, and the braids are proportional to her other features. I have never been able to successfully give pigtail braids to a barbie doll, let alone part her hair without the plugs showing. Because of her unique hair, I am going to use her as a model for my homemade german-inspired dresses. (I also want to make a viking costume based on the doll's outfit to match my own long braids!) As far as technical issues go, it might be noted that her clothes are sewn on, and her helmet is tagged to her head in the back. Her shoes are very loose on her feet. She cannot be posed in a sitting position while wearing the breatplate. She was meant to be a display doll in standing position. I would not give this doll to children- it was obvious to me that she was made for the interested teen or collector. In conclusion, I am very glad I bought two of her because now I can undress one of them. Heck, if I had the money I would buy three- one to keep in the box, one to "play with" and one to put on display!
Ice Princess Rules! September 7, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this barbie for a very good friend who lives in Norway. Since she is of Viking blood - and quite proud of it, I am delighted to say she should be very pleased with this doll. The price - as all the Princess of the World - is marvellous. I have several already and am amazed at the quality and workman ship on the customs for these dolls. At this price how can you resist them? Collectors will love them, yet they are so reasonable your daughter will appreciate a doll that can carry her imagination away. Matel should be applauded for all these in this series.
She comes from the land of the ice and snow... August 30, 2003 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have to admit I wasn't at all disapointed to learn that Mattel was disontinuing the popular Dolls of the World series. It's not that the dolls in that series were bad; they were actually quite nice. But I didn't collect them. So the end of the line meant that I no longer had to feel bad about missing out on them! Oh, but then guess what happened? They actually didn't end the line at all, they simply revamped it. Now, instead of just "Dolls of the World", the series is called "Dolls of the World - The Princess Collection." Same concept, but instead of dolls dressed in traditional, "folk" costumes from different countries, they are dressed in unique costumes that as befitting a princess of a particular country or region.
Even though there was temptation to start and collect this entire new line, I had to be a good girl and devote myself only to those dolls in the collection that I particularly identified with. Which brings me to Princess of the Vikings. My father was always pleased to mention to me that one of our ancestors on his side was probably a Viking, and a very "good" one at that. Apparently this guy was a real warrior type and won more battles than he lost. In any case, I grew up with visions of being a Valkyrie myself - and I was always drawn to that lady in the operas with the long braids and the horned helmet. So, when Princess of the Vikings Barbie doll arrived upon the scene, I knew that she had to be part of my personal collection. She's absolutely beautiful with long, long blonde braids. Yes, she has armor, but of course, it's child-safe plastic rather than metal. Her gown is lovely in white organza with a gold mesh overshirt. She really does look like a real Viking princess.
Another really interesting thing about the Princess of the World collection is that the back of the box really is educational. The back of Princess of the Vikings' box tells the story of the daughter of the chieftain who lives in a Danish village within a fort. It tells about games she likes to play, and about a great yule feast. A pretty doll, and a little something learned. What more can one ask for?
