Amazon.com Review The Melissa and Doug Deluxe Kitchen offers outstanding design features and solid-wood construction that will provide your children with years of serious kitchen fun. Although a bit pricey, this is a kitchen set that has few rivals in terms of safety features, durability, and overall design. Recommended for children three years and older, this kitchen includes a stove top, refrigerator and freezer, see-through oven, microwave, sink, and plenty of storage space.
The deluxe kitchen set is solid and has lots of activities. View larger. |
Kids will love working at the kitchen, pretending to make meals. View larger. | | What We Think Fun Factor:
Durability: (what this means)
The Good: Solid wood construction pre-painted with durable acrylic paint Rounded corners and several safety features; Fun, bold colors ideal for younger children
The Bad: Up to four-hour assembly time required; A bit pricey
In a Nutshell: Long lasting, durable,hard-wood kitchen set that children will enjoy for years. | At a Glance Ages: 6 and up Requires: Phillips and flat screwdriver | | | Set-Up Time and Design Features Before you invest in this set, be prepared for four or more hours of set-up time. To assemble this Deluxe Kitchen Set, you'll be asked to connect over 30 separate sold-wood pieces together with more than 170 nuts, bolts, screws and hinges. Don't panic! The good news is that the instructions couldn't be any easier to follow. If you know how to use a screwdriver and a hex key, you can do it. (A power screwdriver would speed things up quite a bit.) You'll also want a second set of hands on call due to the set's weight--the finished product weighs over 90 pounds. To ease assembly, each wooden piece is color coded and pre-drilled, making it virtually impossible to make mistakes. Just be certain to give yourself plenty of floorspace and time before you start, and with so many easy-to-swallow pieces, you'll want the kids to be fast asleep. The great news is that once the set is assembled, there is a very good chance that it will outlast your child's interest in make-believe kitchens by more than a few years. This kitchen is incredibly well-constructed and designed; you'll consider it as much of a piece of furniture as a child's toy. It would take an extremly determined and strong child with a heavy object to harm it. And if you treat it well, it could easily become an heirloom to pass down to the next generation of young chefs. A nice safety feature parents will love is that there are no sharp angles that can harm stumbling children; every wood piece has been rounded at the corners, and every knob and faucet similarly features soft curves designed specially with toddlers in mind. Each wooden piece and metal hinge is pre-painted with a hard, durable acrylic. All the screws and bolts are recessed, and the see-through oven and microwave feature unbreakable plastic windows. Concerned parents will also appreciate that this toy is made in the USA with nontoxic materials. When completed, the set measures approximately 41x42x17 inches (HxWxD). What the Aspiring Chef Needs Although this set is recommended for children three years of age and older, one of our test children who was two years old loved every macaroni-and-cheese making minute of her time with it. On her tiptoes she could reach the microwave and storage cabinet (the set stands over three feet tall), and over the next several months of growing she will assuredly gain greater satisfaction with easier use of the top shelves. Our slightly taller three-year old test boy also had to reach a bit, but neither one of them minded in the least. The stove dials and sink faucet and assemblies turn freely, which made it easy for the kids to use. Each of the doors is held shut by an adjustable plastic door latch that provides just enough tension to keep them from swinging freely but still easy for the kids to open. The stove,
With rounded corners all around, children won't have to worry about sharp edges. It's possible that as kids grow older, they may want more realistic details, but for toddlers, the bright and bold colors and simple designs are perfect. This is make-believe, after all. Be forewarned that the set itself does not come with any cooking utensils or other assecories. We purchased a Melissa and Doug Kitchen Accessory Set before assembling the kitchen and were glad we did. Our children adopted the wooden pans and spoons immediately, and within minutes they were cooking blue pizza, apple sauce soup, and mango sorbet. While the related accessories would be nice, as long as your children use appropriate objects, such as wooden or plastic utensils and pans, their creations will be just as scrumptious. (Aside from the safety factor, metal objects in the hands of an energetic child will scratch the paint over time.) Overall Impressions Our basic criticisms for this kitchen set are that it's pricey, it takes a long time to assemble, and it's heavy. But this kitchen set is the real deal. It doesn't include a single piece of press board that will warp or cheap plastic detailing that will break easily. Don't consider this a mere toy; think of it as a fun piece of furniture that will provide your child with years of imaginative play. In this day and age of disposable products, we can't offer a great compliment to any toy than to predict that it will likely outlast your children's make-believe years.

very simple to assemble and super cute January 5, 2009 I read the reviews and even talked to a childrens orchard employee who all said this product was very difficult to assemble. The childrens orchard employee said it took her 3 days to assemble and she even drilled holes through the product messing up the refrigerator door and she assembled the microwave backwards. Needless to say I was very worried about purchasing something so difficult to assemble. BUT when it arrived I organized the pieces and followed the directions perfectly. It took me 2 1/5 hours, I used my husbands dewalt drill and I worked alone during nap time at my home daycare. It was EASY!!!! Yes the directions booklet was long, but very easy to follow. I do NOT have a college degree and IM not a craftsman, IM just a young mom and daycare provider and it was SIMPLE!!! Do not let the other reviewers freak you out. It looks amazing too, not one problem, this is a very well made product, the wood is super thick and it is HEAVY when it is assembled. I got it for $99 with free shipping through Amazon... WHAT A DEAL! Totally buy this product!
Adorable - but it IS Made in China January 5, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My husband put this kitchen together today in about 3 1/2 hours. We had returned a similar kitchen by KidKraft that was lower and smaller in scale for the same price. The first thing I want to tell parents is that the Amazon.com review is completely incorrect when it states that "concerned parents will also appreciate that this toy is made in the USA with nontoxic materials". Well, the kitchen comes in two very heavy narrow boxes with "MADE IN CHINA" boldly printed on the front. The instructions, contained in the main box, also says "Made in China". I don't know where the Amazon reviewers got this idea. It would be virutually impossible to sell a pressed wood kitchen made in the USA at this price point - which by the way, varies greatly, as of this writing, in the first week of 2009 it is the lowest I've seen it sold for. Certain merchants will also do free shipping. Since it is a Melissa & Doug product, I trust (and hope) that it is non-toxic - we have many M&D products in our home. The instructions were very easy to follow and they include extra bolts and screws - a bonus if you've ever assembled something and one falls on the carpeting never to be seen again. I can't really speak for long term play - I still have not supplied the fake food and play pots and pans. So far, my 2-year old loves opening and closing the fridge and oven (some are a little more difficult to open than others) and it does look great. Very gender neutral, if that's important.
Re-engineered beautifully! January 2, 2009 Melissa and Doug recently re-engineered this kitchen and it is now quite easy to put together and there was no shipping damage to any of the pieces. My husband and I did it in 2 hours on X-mas eve. There are a lot of pieces to put together which is why it takes that long. We also used an electric screw driver with allen wrench head which made things go faster than the hand allen they send with the kit. The only complication was that the latches on the doors didn't fit quite right. They didn't line up exactly. We widened the mounting holes and were able to adjust them to fit properly.
The material appears to be solid wood rather than a particle board and veneer but it is hard to tell for sure. It is all good quality and a good size for a growing child. Younger children (mine is 19 months) can reach the oven and refrigerator and stove while older children can use the microwave and freezer which are higher.
Our daughter adores it! She plays with it every chance she gets. Once she opened that present on Christmas morning, she wouldn't even look at another present!
Love This Kitchen! January 2, 2009 I purchased this kitchen for my 18 month old for Christmas, and it was a hit! After reading other reviews, I was a little worried about the assembly but it really was easy. It definitely takes 2 people and a couple of hours, but the instructions are well designed to follow step by step. This is a quality piece and it is worth it. The construction is very sturdy and this will last my daughter for years. It is a little big for her now, but I wanted something she could grow into. Right now, she loves the real turning oven knobs and faucet, and opening and closing the cabinet doors. She plays with this everyday.
Bottom line -- this is a great kitchen for a great price. Much nicer than any plastic play furniture. A must have for any kid!
Love this kitchen January 2, 2009 I ordered this kitchen for my son's Christmas. This is a great kitchen and it is so sturdy. I love that it is gender neutral. It took me about 90 minutes to assemble (while watching a movie). All my husband helped with was bringing the boxes into the family room. I layed everything out ahead of time to make sure nothing was missing and this helped everything go a bit faster since I didn't have to stop and look for individual pieces (I just went down the line). It has color coded dots that help determine what side goes where. It was so easy to put together.
