Tips for the Skyrail Marble Run Roller Coaster 150-pc. September 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I selected this item after reading reviews of this and other toys. I purchased just the 150 pc set last month for my 3 1/2 year old grandson. At first I was overwhelmed because the 150 pc set is very limited on how you can set it up. I reccommend that you PURCHASE THE LARGER SET with more pieces. I will be reordering the bigger one to give more options for set up. So I am very happy. NOTE: I found you really need to plan out how you want to set it up in advance on paper. Otherwise, it's trial and error. ALSO, because of the limited options for the smaller set, it slips on the shiny floor and won't stand up... so either put pieces of carpet or grip rubber under each tower or just build it on carpet. PLUS, we had to put various books under the set in places to get the marble to roll. A larger set wouldn't have that problem. For Education, it's great for older kids as it teaches about gravity and motion. Once I got it set up...it was great fun for my 3 1/2 year old. He wouldn't have been able to figure it out by himself. The pieces are sturdy although small but he did break one piece when I didn't help him. Once I showed him how (after I figured it out) he could put pieces together and take them apart. So I recommend it can be used alone after about 5 years old or a very smart 4 year old. Still very educational. NOTE: I was impressed that they said no sweat shops were used to make it and it had good directions and options mainly made for the larger set.
Fantastic, educational toy December 25, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
My nearly five year old daughter and I had a great time putting this together and making it work. It needs adjustment as you go: there are just limited instructions and some photo suggestions, but it's easy to figure out. Once you've set up a run, you need to fine tune it. Two aspects of this toy are educational: the way the parts work (very creative yet sensible) and adjusting it to make it work. Sometimes a marble won't make it all the way, but by making a loop smaller or the starting point higher, for example, you get success. My daughter helped and made suggestions. What fun. A great toy for parent and child to work together on.
GREAT marble run, fun to build and cool to use December 1, 2007 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a toy that will have a looonnnng life span, especially if you are buying it for a 6 year old child! My son is 10 and still plays with his, and we've had highschool kids at our home who also love this marble run. While it seems flimsy, the pieces are really quite durable, and it is the "flimsy" look that makes the marble run look so cool when marbles are racing around it (and the marbles will go fast) - compared to say, the chunky wood ones.
We have the equivalent of two of these sets, my son got one for his birthday and I picked up another at a yard sale. He and his younger siblings play with these constantly, making truly impressive marble runs. They are into experimentation too, "What if we take out this section and add in these two pieces".
My only suggestion, if you are buying for an older child, is that you might want to consider a larger set.
Also, just FYI, my younger kids have some trouble setting this up on the rug. A flat surface will make construction so much easier.
All in all, A+++, an outstanding toy, an outstanding value considering how many years your children will be playing with it.
Finally, a great toy that is not junk (and NOT made in China!) July 4, 2007 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
So many toys these days are just complicated junk made in China. This rollercoaster is very simple, but offers incredible versatility. Unlike K'Nex roller coasters that are incredibly complex and can be built only one way, this rollercoaster set is amazinginly simple but offers unlimited possibilties for building and experimentation. No instructions to follow... just build. Our 6-yr old has spent at least 8 hours over the least two days coming up with alll kinds of creative coasters. Awesome product. We're going to look at some of the other offerings from this company.
Super-creative toy March 12, 2007 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
This toy was an instant success with my son, who is six. He figured out how to put together the track in minutes. Unlike other construction toys, Skyrail is not limited to one or two designs. My son can create endless configurations, including loop-the-loops that really work. This toy is also easy to disassemble. The track and connectors seem a little flimsy, but so far -- after many, many uses -- none of the pieces has broken.
