Amazon.com Review
Clue has been a fiendishly clever board game for almost 60 years, and this DVD edition adds a whole new level of enjoyment to the deductive fun. Experienced Clue-doers will recognize the floor plan layout of the game board, as well as the cards and character pieces. What they might not recognize this time is the crime: The game's central intrigue has been downgraded from murder to a more family-friendly larceny. It's up to players to figure out which of Mr. Boddy's guests is the thief, which item was stolen, as well as the time and location of the theft. The enclosed DVD serves as game master, with animated butler and inspector characters prompting you with questions and/or doling out clues. It may seem like a gimmick at first, but there are several smart ways in which the DVD makes set-up a snap and games both fair and interesting.

Aside from the bells and whistles, this is Clue. The object of the game is to gather clues without giving away too much information to the other players. Once you feel you've adequately sussed out the case, you can test your theory in secrecy through the DVD menu and the special decoder lens. If you're correct, you'll get a satisfying detective show round-up of how all the clues work together to eliminate all of the other possibilities. If you're wrong, you're going to have to show some of your info to the other players. There are ten different mysteries built into the game plus a general game that is more like the traditional Clue board game. It comes with game cards, decoder magnifying glass, DVD disc, game board, four plastic locks, case file envelope, and 10 suspect pawns. --Porter B. Hall

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Game   October 2, 2008
This is a wonderful game. It really enhances the old fashion way of playing the game. Much more fun and enjoyable. My entire family likes to play this version much better. The DVD is great & the graphics are wonderful. The only bad thing like the original game is that you still need a minimum of 2 players.

5 out of 5 stars Great Game!   September 30, 2008
This version of Clue is a bit more complicated than the original version. We were somewhat confused at first, but by the end of our first case we got the hang of it. The key is to LISTEN to everything the butler says... it all pieces together in the end. Super fun!!!

1 out of 5 stars Good Idea Poorly Executed   September 15, 2008
Really...not a bad idea. We went to the store to buy the regular Clue, but this sounded so clever that we dropped $30 to try it out.

Two issues that prevented us initially from being able to play, and will prevent us from enjoying it in the future:

First of all, as mentioned in some of these reviews, the instructions are poorly written. One is led to believe that 1. you HAVE to do two things on each turn, and that 2. all of the possible things you can do are on the DVD menu, and 3. the DVD keeps up with gameplay, like an extension of the board (hint: the DVD is more like a space on the board, like a Chance card in Monopoly--you don't use it unless you need it). After running through several iterations of the game, we never made it past two turns apiece before running out of cards, as we thought we HAD to take a secret passage or make an accusation. It wasn't until we boxed it up for the night in frustration that I jumped on the Googles and discovered that the list of things you CAN do doesn't correlate with the list of things on the DVD menu. Also, it wasn't clear if the characters not on the board could be suspects or not (the answer is yes). So, problem solved until next time we play, yes? No...

The second major issue is that of the four people playing, two of them could see the "secret" letter without the magnifying glass. By the end of the night, a third person could make out 80% of the clues without the magnifying glass. That just completely spoiled what had already turned out to be a poorly executed concept of what could have been a great game.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed   September 6, 2008

My father had trouble finding the traditional Clue version for my daughter so he bought this one. Unfortunately, we will need to get rid of this one, as the documentation is so poor that we ended up showing each other our cards just to get the solution after many attempts to make this game work for us. Such a bummer, but I could never recommend this version, even though the DVD itself is well done, because the documentation was poor and seems aimless. Maybe if you throw away the board and really work at making the DVD make sense with the cards, you might get some play time out of it, but I'll leave that for someone at the thrift store to figure out.
