Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
If you enjoy the fun of radio-controlled vehicles, but dont always want to leave the comfort of your couch to go outside and play, check out these Air Hogs Havoc Helicopters. Measuring a mere six inches long and weighing only a half pound, these small but mighty choppers are made for indoor dueling -- so you dont have to quit flying just because of bad weather or a dark sky. A crash-resistant foam fuselage means you can perfect your piloting skills using the dual-toggle, single-throttle wireless controller. The twin drive props in back and dual rotors on top provide exceptional stability and precise six-way directional control -- up, down, left, right, forward, and back. Sled-style landing gear means set-downs should be gentle, too.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Radio controlled helicopters shoot infrared "guns"

The Bad: Learning to control flights is tricky

In a Nutshell: Once you get the hang of flying, these little helicopters inspire tons of fun

Action-Packed Flight Lessons
Featuring colorful foam bodies, blinking lights, and plastic rotors, these detailed helicopters have plenty of aesthetic appeal. Before you start flying, you'll need to charge your dueling helicopters. Use a Philips head screwdriver to insert six AA batteries (not included) in each controller. Then plug each helicopter into a controller. Since the prongs on each plug are small, you'll need to take care to seat them correctly.

Now it's time to start practicing. You'll want to encourage kids to get familiar with the controls before they engage in a big-time air battle, since flying these choppers well takes practice. In addition to an on-off switch and a switch that lets you select the correct channel to control your helicopter, each hand-held controller has a throttle stick, a rudder stick, a button to adjust for trimming, and two thumb buttons for firing your infrared "guns."

We found the best way to start off was flying one helicopter at a time in a large, indoor space, while focusing simply on hovering an even distance above the ground. This simple task is trickier to master than you might imagine, but with enough practice it becomes second nature. The included instruction manual and Havoc Heli Laser Battle DVD offer lots of tips for learning to fly, from focusing on the helicopter instead of the controller to applying very gentle pressure on the control sticks.

Fun, Imaginative Play for Expert Pilots
Once two players have learned the basics of flight, you're ready for battle. The included Air Hogs mini comic provides battle strategies, along with suggestions for adding intrigue to your laser battles. Kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy the first time they score a big hit on an opponent and see his chopper spin out of control.

Younger children may end up disappointed with the learning curve associated with these helicopters, since their friends will have to practice before they can play together. That makes these a good bet for siblings or neighbors who play together often, since they can master flight simultaneously.

Additionally, these helicopters offer an excellent opportunity for parents and kids to play together, offering each other flight tips and competing on equal ground. You may find yourself having even more fun than your children with these remote-control choppers.

Overall, this battle set is a great way to teach patience, persistence, and principles of flight, all while having a great time. Our one real concern is the durability of the helicopters themselves. While Air Hogs thoughtfully includes extra tail rotors, and our helicopters survived lots of brutal crashes while we were learning to fly, they are made of foam and lightweight plastic. This means that any chopper that gets stepped on or tossed around is almost sure to sustain some damage.

What's in the Box
Two helicopters, two controllers, DVD with battle and flight tips, four spare tail rotors, rotor removal tool, aluminum labels, mini comic book, and an instruction manual.

5 out of 5 stars My four year old loves them!   January 6, 2009
Santa brought these for my four year old (even though they are 8+). He is able to fly them! He has crashed several times, but they still able to fly! We all enjoy these helicopters!

3 out of 5 stars Your average Air Hogs   January 6, 2009
Thank goodness I knew what to expect with the AIR HOG toys.., but he wanted them so I ordered them. The package came quickly and nicely shipped. 2 Airhogs for the price of one wasn't a bad deal. I knew one would break quickly, which it did (in 2 days) he still is playing with the other one , it made it past the NEW YEARS! Don't expect a toy that will last very long but they are LOADS of fun. Best to get them on sale.

Overall: fun toy for kids, don't have high expectations, don't get mad when they break quickly.

We've had big way hoopty fun with these helicopters so far! I'm still working on getting them trimmed out for optimum flight, but other than the challenge of trimming them out, they're working great! Younger kids might have difficulty flying them, leading toward some frustration, but depending on their ability to learn and have fun, as long as they fly them in a wide open space with little to crash into, they should have a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious fun!   December 30, 2008
Bought these for our grandson for Christmas and they were a big hit with all the kids (even Mom). Youngest was in fits of laughter the entire time he flew. Had doubts that they would last the day, but they weren't as fragile as expected. Amazon had a good price on them this year, so we took the chance. A bit tricky to control, but that just makes for more laughs. If looking for a toy to last for years, this probably isn't it--but for short term fun, definitely fits the bill. We bought the extra rotors & parts, but they haven't needed them yet.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun. Hard to break.   December 28, 2008

Santa brought this toy to my four year old son after he saw the ad on Nickelodeon about ten thousand times and was insistent. I was hesitant because of the cost and wasn't sure how much fun it would be for him at his age. I found a great deal through amazon right before Christmas and couldn't pass it up. I am glad I did. Although my son is unable to actually use them to fight we have found it great for one to charge while he is using the other. It helps greatly with his limited patience. Also, he knows how to use the controls pretty well but can't steer it well. Either can I though. It is pretty tricky. The good thing is though he has run this into everything including his sister (accidently) and no harm was done to the helicopter or my daughter or the furniture. After several uses though he did break a rotor but the box comes with replacements so that wasn't so bad and I see that they are pretty cheap to replace.
I guess the biggest down fall would be their size. My son stopped playing with one after it fell and it is lost right now. They are pretty tiny and if you let go of the controls for even a milisecond it falls out of the air.
Overall a lot of fun for everyone - especially my husband.
