Great for little budding batmans; I just hope they hold up. November 24, 2008 Our son (almost 5) has been asking santa for these for a couple of months now. Given the exhorbitant price tag ($40) we held off thinking that he would forget about them. It's now the only thing he's asking santa for so we figured we'd better get him a pair ($28 at TRU with a 20% coupon which we didn't think was so bad). Given all the negative reviews, mom thought she'd better check them out first. When taken out of the box, the only assembly required is for both ends of the wing; there is a plastic rod that inserts into the joint that forms the top part of the wingspan. It seems sturdy enough but whether it will hold up to repeated openings/closing, I don't know. You put the backpack on and it seems pretty secure with a strap around the waist and a strap coming down each shoulder to connect. On each shoulder strap there's a cord; to open the wings you pull down on the cords at the same time and hey presto, they snap open to their full 5-ft wingspan. I have to say, that it's pretty impressive and I know that my budding batman is just going to think that he is the business with these things on! To retract the wings again, you pull on the cords until they are closed; for me it took about 4 pulls until they were completely closed. Whether my guy will have the patience to do this, who knows! I suspect they'll maybe do one or two pulls until it's 'good enough'; problem is they'll probably get broken from them running into something that's too narrow when they thing they've pulled the things all the way in. So, the mechanism would have been better designed with a single pull to close.
I think my son will have a blast with these on christmas day but I don't expect them to last too long. I didn't mind paying $28 for these, but think they're probably worth around $20. I made sure that I bought them from somewhere with a liberal return policy as I fully expect to be returning them broken at some point after the holidays.
No good; don't bother. October 25, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Cheap and flimsy. Wings don't open all the way; other positive reviews must have been written by the maker.
I'm glad I started to open these types of gifts before giving it to my son, to check and see if they work at all. Yup, it's made in China.
"Easy Close!" is a lie, it takes "several times" per the directions to get the wings closed.
he IS batman! October 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
my son received these wings for his 7th birthday. he wants to sleep in them! the wingspan on these is HUGE! he does get upset that he can't fit down the hallway with them open but he just goes down sideways which is actually quite funny. i just love the backpack style and that he has full control over the open and closing of the wings. we had no problem with them working straight out of the box with just one minor little assembly. the cowl is awesome and i'm glad that the cape is attached so that he can't lose it. it was well worth the money and i know he'll use it for years to come. LOVE IT!
What a piece of crap August 13, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If I could choose negative stars I would, but one star is as low as this review goes. We are already on our second pair of wings. The first pair didn't work straight out of the box, only one side would open, and were replaced within the hour. The second pair does the same thing after only a couple days of playing with it very sparingly. I think the toy company wanted to get these and other crappy batman toys (i.e. Dark Knight Batman Stealth Launch Batmoblie Vehicle) out for children not old enough to even see the movie unless they have morons for parents, that they wasted little time on the design of these toys. Do not waste your money. What a piece of garbage. This second pair are going back and we will be avoiding the batman toys.
Batman Wayne Tech Mega Cape for the win! July 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ordered this to wear to the release of The Dark Knight! I was very pleased not only with how well it is made, but the smoothness of its operation. Plus the way it wears like a backpack without the wings deployed, no one notices what it is. You can enter an area with stealth, no one realizing who you really are. Then you pull the cord and WHAM! I'M BATMAN, CRIME DOESN'T PAY! I give it two batarangs up!
