We really enjoyed it! July 27, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The caterpillars arrived pretty quickly after we sent the card in to request them. They were super teeny but quickly ate their way up to a chunky size. We were amazed at how quickly they beefed up! All 5 survived. We really enjoyed watching them emerge and releasing them into our garden after a day or two of keeping them in the observation box. This was very educational. It gave the kids a great appreciation of butterflies.
The most sickly butterflies I've ever seen! June 21, 2001 13 out of 22 found this review helpful
We have bought "butterfly kits" before. I would recommend butterfly kits to everyone, just not this company's. By the time the caterpillars arrived, they had already formed their cocoons. So, my kids were unable to watch them as caterpillars. Then, because they had been jostled around in their cocoon stage, one of them fell off the ceiling. The box said to put the fallen cocoons gently on the floor of the box, but I would not recommend this; just quietly throw them away. Instead of becoming a butterfly, we got to watch that chrysalid slowly darken and become scarier looking. Out of the remaining 4 chrysalids, 1 butterly was unable to open and spread its wings, so it eventually died of starvation or something, and another one never flew away, but staying in the box and died. We only had two healthy butterflies fly away. Needless to say we learned very little about metamorphosis, and a lot about DEATH and DYING! Get a kit from a different company and save yourself the grief!
Set the butterflies free June 13, 2001 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Last year I purchased the Butterfly Garden by Insect Lore for my 5 year old granddaughter. When the butterfly larva arrived it was exciting for her father, papa and myself as well as Alicia. The whole process was exciting from the hatching of the larvae, letting the butterflies maturing and getting ready to fly. We used our Camcorder to tape this over the period of weeks. It was very satisfying the Saturday that we took them outside and let them free. I have now received the Silkworm by Insect Lore and we are waiting for the worms to come in to get started. I rate this higher than a 5 star.
Cubicle pets for all! May 21, 2001 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I work in a office where we are mostly cubicle dwellers. I had been wanting this kit for a long time, and I can honestly say it was worth it! The catepillars arrived to me, and although 1 did die, the rest started eating, with noticeable changes every day. Everyone in the office was amazed, they were on the top of my cubicle so everyone could see them, and they were perfect pets. Within a week they had spun their cocoons and were put in the box. This is a great project because you do not have to wait to see the changes, and it is very exciting the whole time. MY whole office was eager every day to see what was going on, and when I let them go, we had a huge crowd outside cheering them on. I would recommend this for any age, it was a really rewarding present!
Our fifth grade class loves these butterflies! March 8, 2001 76 out of 76 found this review helpful
I student teach in a fifth grade classroom, and I've discovered that this butterfly garden is the perfect subject for scientific journals and beginning diagrams. Our class watched five butterflies metamorphasize over the course of about a month. As a writing exercise, I asked each of my students to write a review about the butterfly habitat. Here is what they wrote: "I liked watching the stages of the butterflies. I liked watching the butterflies flying around." "It seems like the butterflies are cramped, but I like it because it has sunlight for them. It's a perfect habitat." "I like the butterflies because they are fun to look at, and they are beautiful. I have learned a lot about butterflies." "We liked raising the butterflies, watching them grow up, and seeing them go from a caterpillar to a butterfly." One even wrote, "I like the butterflies because I think it is a good learning experience. The butterflies are very pretty," and, "I like the butterflies because before they went into their cocoons I think their heads fell off!!" As you can see, the children really enjoyed watching metamorphosis in their classroom. I don't think they'll ever forget watching the butterflies grow up, so they will really remember the stages of butterfly metamorphosis. Overall, I would also rate this habitat highly. I was afraid that the caterpillars would take a long time to arrive, but they arrived less than a week after I mailed the pre-addressed postcard asking for them to be sent. (That was in February) The habitat wasn't as sturdy as it could have been, but its clear sides made observation easy when lots of children wanted to see inside. The teacher I work with is kind enough to feed the butterflies everyday, and it looks like a pretty sticky job! (The butterflies eat normal sugar water.) Feeding them after they emerge from their cocoons will be a little messy. It was incredibly easy to raise these butterflies. Even with 21 students peering at them and jostling their habitat, all five of the butterflies made it. Our fifth grade class highly recommends this easy-to-build, fun-to-watch scientific habitat.
