Description
The 2000 World Series, otherwise known as the "Subway Series," was the first intra-city matchup since 1956. While the New York Yankees defeated the Mets in a brief five games, it was hard-fought all the way. Every game was decided by no more than two runs, and the first and fifth were won in the Yankees' final at-bat. The Yankees won their third straight championship and their fourth in five years, as series MVP Derek Jeter and both teams' pitchers turned in dazzling performances. History, though, may remember this World Series most for Game 2's bizarre bat-throwing incident between Yankees hurler Roger Clemens and Mets superstar Mike Piazza.

Following three world championships in four years, the New York Yankees' dynasty was starting to show a little wear in 2000. Still, the Bronx Bombers managed to stumble into the playoffs and get past the Oakland A's and Seattle Mariners. Meanwhile, the Mets disposed of the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, leading to the show everyone in New York wanted to see: Yankees vs. Mets in the first subway series since 1956.

This 70-minute video offers over 50 minutes of Series coverage, including pitching duels, base-running blunders, and surprise heroes. Game 2, of course, is best known for the infamous bat-throwing incident between Yankees hurler Roger Clemens and Mets slugger Mike Piazza, which you'll see from several angles (the overhead is the most unusual and most interesting). A bonus is this video's inclusion of something as small (yet significant) as Paul O'Neill's tough 10-pitch walk that began the tying rally in Game 1, and there are interviews with role players such as Luis Sojo and Benny Agbayani as well as stars Derek Jeter (the series MVP) and David Justice. After five hard-fought games, the Yankees had won their fourth championship in five years and carried an emotional Joe Torre off the field. Bernie Williams comments, "It's just amazing the fact that we have been able to do it year after year after year." It might not be so amazing considering the Yankees' $114 million payroll for 2000, but of all baseball's big spenders, the Yankees are far and away the most successful. The dynasty continues. --David Horiuchi
