We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to. First off, I bought R2 instead of buying the WALL-E robot toy for my youngest daughter for Christmas. I did a lot of searching and reviewing before my decision. Instead of spending $200+ for a Disney hit character, I spent the $100 for a timeless classic character. Even when they are older, R2 will have replay due to the IP.
The toy is great and well worth it. If there is a lot of commotion around and noises, it sometimes has a problem understanding what the command is. My daughters for example all trying to asking to dance.
They did manage to snap a leg off of him, but surprisingly- this R2 unit is actually engineered pretty well. I was able to snap it right back on and he was good to go.
It's well worth it, even though you have to speak the commands broken up (I assume that is the limitations to the technology than anything else.) This toy gives as much fun as a toy robot could and a little extra with imagination. I gave it 3 stars for education due to the fact that it could help a little with speech and following commands along with navigation plotting if set a patrol route.
I consider reviews before I purchase, so I hope it helps out.
 Our R2D2 just DOES NOT WORK January 8, 2009
This toy just simply does not work, not even the simplest command like "go on patrol". my 6-yr-old son is a little star wars fan, so imagine how excited he was when he unwrapped his Christmas present and what a disappointment it turn out to be when Artoo simply just ignored him :(, we read the instruction over and over just can not figure out, tried wait for the ready beep, tried say "hey, R2" out loud 1st then gave break time for 2nd command... nothing works. hope i didn't throw away the receipt so quickly, now we stuck with it, up on the shelf collecting dust:(
 Christmas gift for my Star Wars fanatical 5 year old January 6, 2009
I staged R2 under a box for Christmas so that he would respond and startle my son. R2 was a huge hit. R2 does have a mind of his own, even if you follow the command directions down to the letter. A little frustrating, but this item is not found on the shelves of Toys R' Us so it is a one of a kind at show and tell. Worth the money if you have a little Star Wars fanatic at home. (R2 has fell down a flight of stairs and seems to be working fine)
Great for child with Autism or speech delay January 6, 2009
I have a 9 year old son with autism and this toy has been GREAT for getting him to talk and to do so correctly. He really wants to make R2 dance and scream and that means he has to state the commands correctly. GREAT toy, he LOVES it
R2 for 10 year old January 6, 2009
Bought this for my 10 year old son for Christmas 2008. He loves it. It's actually not as fragile as I was expecting. We have carpet throughout our house which I thought was going to be a problem. Although I'm sure R2 would prefer hard floors, he works fine on our carpeted floors. The only problem I had with this was the price. I actually ordered one and 3 weeks later it was on the same amazon website for $40 less. I called amazon to get them to credit the difference back to my card and they would only return the item. Seemed silly to me. I just ordered a new one at the lower price and sent the other one back for a refund. It actually cost amazon more because they paid the additional shipping. Turns out, I was glad I had the extra one because one of them started having some problems responding to commands and I swapped them out when my son wasn't looking.
If you're a Star Wars fan you'll love this little R2. I got mine for about $80. I wouldn't pay the $170 some places are charging. It isn't worth that much.
